Last week was anything but boring. A week ago Monday, I got a phone call at 2:00 a.m. A lady in our church had started labor. I had told her before to let me know if she needed anything, however, I wasn’t prepared for a middle-of-the-night call. I thought she was in the early stages of labor, so I told her to get a piki-piki (public transportation on a mo-ped) to take her to the hospital in the morning. At 6:00 she called back to say that she was at the hospital waiting to see the doctor. At 9:00 I called back, and she was still waiting in the hallway since there were no beds available for the nurses to even admit her. I told her to meet me at the gate, that I was taking her to the hospital where I delivered our youngest four. Within 5 minutes of our arrival, she been examined and put into the delivery room (the difference between city hospital and private hospital). Being unwed and not having the support of her family since she won’t return to Catholicism, I was the only one with her. 50 minutes after our arrival, a tiny 2.2 kilo baby girl was born. I stayed with her until 1:00 p.m., and then two ladies from the church took turns the rest of the day and night staying by her side. Tuesday morning I was back at the hospital to pick her up. But nothing is simple – 3 hours to get her checked out! But praise the Lord, both Annette and her baby Hannah are doing fine.
